Sometimes you don't really need anything to tell you what's going on in the photo
(at least in the most basic sense - guy was out at the bag. I know my newspaper and wire service friends will say "How was he out? Who threw him out?", etc., etc.)
But sometimes you do. Wouldn't you love to know what Billy Ripken (r) was saying to his brother Cal?

Spring must be here, baseball is near!
Here's an oldie from the film days when we could shoot double exposures, which this is. We were also right on the field at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland at that time, which allowed me to put the camera on the ground for this angle. Those days (both for film and field) are long gone.

At least the sun is out!
It's beautifully sunny, though quite cold for late March. Some work was going on at the house, so it was a good day to take some photos.
The Sony NEX series cameras will do an in camera panorama. The setting is called sweep panorama, and it works by taking a number of pictures as you sweep the camera across a scene. They are then stitched together in the camera to produce the final image. I've made 30" wide photos that look great.

The first image was taken with the wide panorama setting. This was with the standard setting.
Tremont is an area just west of downtown Cleveland with interesting restaurants, art galleries, and other arts venues.
Lots of abandoned industrial buildings in the flats to find photos!
And still a lot of activity in the area as well.

Finally, some urban living. Good to see people living in the city.

A stroll down memory lane
I spent some time recently on the campus of Case Western Reserve University, where I studied engineering for 2 years. Margot was participating in the National History day program. There was plenty of down time, so I wandered about campus with one of my trusty point and shoots.
I had physics in this building (what else!) I see that they have replaced the windows since 1976. At the time the windows were old and drafty. We were the second class of the day in a large lecture room on one of the upper floors. In the winter the first class (at 7:30 a.m.) would write the temperature of the room on the blackboard , which was usually 59 degrees. By the time of our 8:30 a.m. class it had usually risen to about 62 degrees!

This was a newer addition to the campus, a walkway between two existing buildings.
Strosacker Auditorium, site of the National History day performances (Margot's was group performance, junior division.) I had computer programming in Strosacker.
The awards ceremony was held in Amasa Stone Chapel on campus. The light was really sweet coming in through the upper windows, and all I had was the P&S! Oh, well.
Some more from Amasa Stone Chapel
And, of course, the reason for being there that day, the NHD events. Margot, Maggie and Katherine display the hardware (3rd place group performance for "4 Women, 1 Dream", about the struggle for women's equality.) They also display what photographers know well, "3 girls, 1 picture - someone's gonna have their eyes closed!"

You learn something new everyday. Turns out if you click on the images they get nice and large, and the effect of the filters is easily seen.
Chagrin Falls
Needing to waste a little time last night I found myself in Chagrin Falls. I enjoy playing around with the artistic filters in Photoshop.
This is the straight image:
This is with the cutout filter:
This is with the watercolor filter:
I size them at 18 x 12 inches, a size where the effect shows up better than here on the screen!

Chagrin River Dam break
Went out this morning to take a photo of what is left of the dam on the Chagrin River in Gates Mills. The 105 year old dam collapsed on February 22 during flooding caused by heavy rains. I've been taking some photos for the Gates Mills Historical Society, and this is the lowest river has been, allowing a good look at the remnants of the dam.

Welcome!
Welcome to Photo Fun on the North Coast, a blog about photography, with some sports thrown in (because that's what I shoot!)
